In a blog post today, Google announced “Project Fi” for their new wireless service. It is not new that the Mountain View tech giant expand their business into service provider. From Gigabyte internet in selected cities to the wireless service they now offer.

The entry level plan “Fi Basics” starts from only $20, which includes unlimited domestic talk and text, unlimited international texts, Wi-Fi tethering to use your phone as a hotspot, and access cellular coverage in 120+ countries. If you want to call international numbers, you pay a flat $0.2/min when you are not in WiFi and a low rate (depend on the country you called) when you are in WiFi.

One good thing about the Project Fi is that it will switch automatically to the best available partner (Sprint and T-Mobile) connection, be it LTE, CDMA, or verified open WiFi. We as consumer actually don’t care about which underline is used, we only care about get good connection. The WiFi calls are seamlessly integrated for Android phones, for iOS devices you would need to dial from Google Hangout Apps.

The data is $10/GB and you only pay for the data you used, which means if you bought 1GB data and only used 350MB, they will only charge you $3.5. One thing that is still not clear about after reading their FAQ page is whether they count the data usage when you are using WiFi. It would be ridiculous if they do though.

It seems that Google is lean towards to the pay-as-you-go mentality, as they don’t offer any unlimited data or international calling plans. It would be something to consider if you need a lot of data or lots of international calls to make (compare with the T-Mobile plans).

If you have a family plan with other networks, you would need to setup account for each individual with Project Fi (what? really?).
